The third day of the first Test between England and India at Headingley ended with the match finely poised, as rain brought an early end to play. England resumed their innings with Ollie Pope and Harry Brook at the crease. Prasidh Krishna opened the bowling, conceding 11 runs in the first over of the day.
Shortly afterwards, Pope, who was on 106, edged a delivery from Krishna to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and departed. The Indian vice-captain, visibly frustrated, had a word with the umpire regarding a change of ball during the time of play. After the drinks break, England skipper Ben Stokes fell to a brilliant delivery from Mohammed Siraj that moved away off the seam, taking the edge. Stokes expressed his frustration by flinging his bat into the air.
Harry Brook, meanwhile, brought up his half-century, his second at Headingley in his three Test innings. At lunch, England were 327 for 5, trailing by 144 runs. The breakthrough after the break came when Jamie Smith was dismissed via a well-executed relay catch involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sai Sudharsan.
Brook looked poised for a century but fell agonizingly short on 99, attempting to reach his hundred with a six. It was the first time in his Test career that he was dismissed in the 99s. He became the 16th England batter to fall on 99, the last being Jonny Bairstow against South Africa in 2017.
Chris Woakes added quick runs, bringing up 2,000 Test runs with back-to-back sixes off Krishna, reducing England’s deficit to just 30. Woakes and Brydon Carse stitched together a rapid 50-run partnership in just 36 balls. England were eventually bowled out for 465, conceding a narrow six-run lead to India.
Bumrah claimed away from home five-wicket haul
Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers by taking 5 for 83. With this, he claimed his 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, becoming the fastest Indian to do so in just 64 innings. Krishna’s economy rate of 6.4 was the joint-sixth highest for any Indian bowler in a Test innings.
In India’s second innings, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal fell cheaply to Carse, caught by Smith. KL Rahul and Sudharsan then put on a 66-run stand for the second wicket before Sudharsan fell once again to Stokes, his second dismissal to the England captain in the match.
At stumps on Day 3, India were 90 for 2, leading by 96 runs. Rahul remained unbeaten on 47, alongside Shubman Gill on 6, as the rain brought an early close to day 3.
