In the past few years, it has not been uncommon to read ‘AI will replace humans’, especially after the mass popularity of popular artificial intelligence and General Purpose Tools (GPT). It seems that the norm has hit the world of cricket as well. Recently, a development broke out on social media regarding the replacement of on-field umpires with artificial intelligence.
Claims of using AI-generated visuals and advanced technology to determine key decisions in a game of cricket will eliminate the presence of the on-field umpires in the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). CPL’s official social media handles posted about the replacement of umpires with AI cameras for the league’s 2026 edition.
“A historic cricket first! In a landmark decision, there will be no on-field umpires for the 2026 season of CPL. Instead, AI-generated visuals will be utilised in a move to incorporate more technology on match days,” CPL posted via its official ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) handle on Wednesday.
So is AI actually replacing on-field umpires in cricket?
While it may sound astonishing, it can easily be identified that the update shared by CPL, even though on their official social media account, is totally untrue. Upon further reading the caption of the post, it can be clearly read that CPL has used the #AprilFoolsDay hashtag with the post, clearly indicating that it is a mere customary prank on April Fools Day, which is celebrated on the 1st of April every year.
However, one must not rule out the possibility of a time when umpires may actually use artificial intelligence for making on-field decisions in a game of cricket. Over the years, umpiring in cricket has largely been complimented by the increased usage of technology. Television replays, the Umpire Decision Review System, and Hawkeye technology are only a few of many tools that have made the job of umpiring convenient and more accurate than humanly possible.
