Leeds United have identified James Trafford as their sole active target in goal this summer.
They remain stuck in a valuation deadlock with Southampton over Shea Charles, and retain genuine interest in free agent Julian Brandt. Several other names circulating this week are, on our understanding, not live pursuits.
The update lands as Daniel Farke’s squad departs for a pre-season tour of the United States. They will face Wrexham in Tampa, Sunderland in New Jersey and Liverpool in Chicago.
Director of football Adam Underwood and the recruitment team have stayed behind in the UK to push on with transfer business while the first team builds fitness across the Atlantic.
The goalkeeping situation is the most pressing. Illan Meslier’s departure left a gap that was never satisfactorily filled, and Karl Darlow, who ended last season as first-choice keeper, has since moved on to Manchester United.
Lucas Perri, signed for £13.9m last summer, has now agreed a loan move to Torino after one difficult Premier League season. That leaves Leeds needing a new number one before the campaign starts.
Trafford: The Only Name On The Goalkeeper Shortlist
Trafford is the goalkeeper at the very top of Leeds’ agenda and, crucially, the only keeper the club have actually made a move for. That is a significant clarification given the volume of names that have been floated in recent weeks.
The 23-year-old Manchester City shot-stopper is currently on a three-week break after helping England to a third-place finish at the World Cup.
He is expected to use that time to weigh up his next move. Leeds have been tracking him since at least February and are firmly in the conversation around a deal this summer.
On the other goalkeeper name in circulation, Royal Union Saint-Gilloise’s Kjell Scherpen, there is currently no active pursuit. Leeds are aware of the 6ft 5in Dutch keeper, but that is as far as it goes for now.
Charles: Three Approaches, No Agreement
Shea Charles is the most frustrating thread in this update. Leeds have made three approaches to Southampton for the 22-year-old Northern Ireland international, and reports of an imminent deal have been well wide of the mark.
Southampton value Charles in excess of £20m. Leeds’ valuation does not match that figure, and as things stand the stalemate remains unbroken.
Charles has established himself as one of the more versatile midfield options in the Championship, comfortable as a holding midfielder and capable of covering at right-back and centre-back when required.
That utility clearly appeals to Farke, but it does not automatically translate into Southampton accepting below their asking price, particularly with other clubs also showing interest.
Brandt: Father At Thorp Arch, Competitive Market
Julian Brandt is a free agent after his Borussia Dortmund contract expired this summer, and the interest from Leeds carries more weight than a speculative link. Brandt’s father Jurgen visited Thorp Arch for talks, a named family member in the building for structured conversations rather than vague transfer noise.
The complication is that Leeds are not alone. The 30-year-old German international has attracted interest from other clubs.
For a player of Brandt’s standing, a full international with Champions League and major tournament experience, that competition will inevitably drive up wage demands.
Leeds can offer Premier League football on a free transfer acquisition cost, which is a meaningful pitch, but the field is competitive and there are no guarantees. Leeds’ approach to Brandt has been described as an aggressive push, and the Thorp Arch visit from his father appears to back that up.
Sulc: The Contingency Option
Leeds have also been linked with Czech attacker Pavel Sulc of Lyon, though the situation mirrors the one with Scherpen. Leeds are not actively pursuing a deal as things stand. That could change, but it is conditional.
The clear subtext is that Sulc becomes a serious option if the Brandt pursuit falls through.
He is a different profile, a pressing, second-line creator rather than the kind of established playmaker Brandt represents, but he would address a similar positional need at likely lower cost. For now, Leeds are clearly prioritising the Brandt route rather than working a parallel track to Lyon.
Sulc came through at Viktoria Plzen before making the step up to Ligue 1. His broader market reputation is that of a tactically flexible attacking midfielder rather than an out-and-out number ten. Whether that fits the Farke system depends entirely on what other business lands first.
Stones And The Denmark Striker
Two further names are worth mentioning. Leeds have confirmed interest in Manchester City’s John Stones, though the club are well down a competitive field, with a surprise team currently leading the pursuit. This reads less as a live target and more as due diligence noted by intermediaries.
Farke also wants another option up front. Leeds are among the clubs contacted by intermediaries representing a prolific striker based in Denmark. The player has not been named in reporting so far. But the fact that Farke is actively pursuing a forward addition alongside the midfield and goalkeeping business says something about the ambition attached to this window.
The Bigger Picture At Elland Road
What this update illustrates is a club operating on several fronts simultaneously but with clarity about which targets are genuine and which are background noise.
The goalkeeping priority is unambiguous, Trafford or nobody else right now. The Brandt pursuit has concrete momentum behind it. The Charles situation is real interest stymied by a valuation gap that has not closed across three approaches.
The sales picture at Elland Road matters too. How much Leeds raise from outgoing business will shape what they can commit on wages for a player of Brandt’s standing. It will also shape the fee required to prise Trafford away from City or Charles from Southampton.
Leeds have completed transfer business from abroad during pre-season tours before, having finalised deals for Perri and Anton Stach while travelling last summer.
So the trip to America is unlikely to slow things down. Underwood and his team staying home while the squad tours suggests the next few days will be decisive on at least one of these threads.
The Trafford pursuit is the most consequential story here. A promoted side securing a 23-year-old England international as their first-choice goalkeeper would represent a genuine statement of intent.
The fact that Leeds have moved for nobody else in goal makes it clear this is not a scattergun approach. It is a targeted push, and Trafford’s post-World Cup decision will go a long way to defining how the rest of Leeds’ summer takes shape.
