Saturday’s early kick-off pits two of the Premier League’s top three against each other at Villa Park, but the latest Arsenal injury update suggests they could be without key members of their league-leading defence.
In the opening match of Gameweek 15, Arsenal will be understandably confident – despite a few concerning injuries in recent weeks – of taking all three points.
Particularly after manager Mikel Arteta was able to give key players Bukayo Saka, Jurriën Timber and Eberechi Eze somewhat of a rest in their win over Brentford on Wednesday.
Can Arsenal Make it Back-to-Back Wins at Villa Park?
In the repeat of this encounter back in August, Arsenal triumphed 2-0 courtesy of goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey. However, Arteta won’t be able to call upon the pair this weekend as Partey departed in the summer, while Trossard faces a race against time to shake off his injury.
With Villa in sensational form after four consecutive Premier League wins, Arsenal already face perhaps one of their toughest tests yet.
Villa have dealt Arsenal some of their most painful defeats in their hunt for the title in recent seasons, with that victory last season their only win against Unai Emery’s men in the previous four encounters (1W, 1D, 2L).
That isn’t the only concern for the Gunners, with a spate of injuries also giving Arteta a headache. That’s not to say that Villa aren’t cursing their own injury luck, with their first-choice goalkeeper likely to be restricted to the treatment table.
Latest Arsenal Injury Update
With Gabriel and William Saliba’s absence felt at Chelsea last weekend, it still remains uncertain whether the latter will take to the pitch.
It appeared that Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié would be Arteta’s pairing once again.
However, Mosquera was forced off against Brentford with an ankle injury, which could force Arteta into pushing any of Jurrien Timber, Ben White or Riccardo Calafiori into the centre of defence – all of whom have played there previously.
With Ollie Watkins’ new-found confidence and Morgan Rogers finding his feet against Brighton last time out, the pair will certainly be targeting a potentially never-before-seen centre-back pairing.
There is also an option for 16-year-old teen prodigy Marli Salmon to make his first-team debut, if Arteta really rolls the defensive dice at Villa Park.
Villa’s confidence will be further boosted with the news that a calf injury could rule talismanic midfielder Declan Rice out of the game. The unknown pairing at the back may be cause for concern, but Rice’s absence could be an even more pressing issue in a pivotal fixture.
Missing such an influential player, who can dictate how a match unfolds and change a game within a matter of seconds, could spell disaster. It is likely Martin Zubimendi could slot back into his role, although Arsenal could be without Rice’s defensive stability and rampaging runs through the middle of the park.
Villa do have a big injury concern of their own. Number one Emiliano Martínez is a doubt for the game with a back injury, which forced him to withdraw from the starting line-up against Brighton on Wednesday. It, therefore, appears that Marco Bizot will retain his place on the Villans’ starting team sheet. This is the hosts’ only injury concern, while Ross Barkley, Tyrone Mings and Álvaro García remain long-term absentees.
Ollie Watkins Record Against Arsenal Could Hold the Key
Before bagging a brace against Brighton, Ollie Watkins had gone nine matches without a goal. This sudden uptick in form may be cause for concern for Arsenal – the 29-year-old has six goals in 10 Premier League appearances against the Gunners.
However, Arsenal have conceded a divisional-low seven times in 2025/26, keeping eight clean sheets in 14 matches this season.
Aston Villa at Home This Season
Emery’s men have won their previous five league matches in front of their own fans, while triumphing in their previous eight in all competitions.
Three points would see Villa move into second position in the Premier League ahead of Manchester City, before Pep Guardiola’s side’s match against high-flying Sunderland. On the other hand, Arsenal’s search for an 11th league win this season could see the Gunners potentially up to eight points clear at the top, if the Citizens were to lose.
