Maycee Barber is speaking out following a literal last minute withdrawal from the main event of last weekend’s UFC Vegas 107 main event.
Barber was set to fight Erin Blanchfield in a women’s flyweight fight with title implications, but the fight was cancelled just as both fighters were set to make their walks. Blanchfield was told it was because Barber had a seizure, but in a new interview with ESPN, Barber says it’s not quite that simple.
“I hate going back and being like, ‘We have no answers,’ but we’re not entirely sure what happened,” Barber said. “Obviously, there was a medical emergency. We’re not quite sure exactly what it was, what it is … but there was a event that happened in the back when I was warming up and the doctor, the commissioners, everybody saw it.”
her team has told her.
“They’re like, ‘We had about thirty minutes until you were gonna walk and that’s when everything kinda started to happen.’” she said. “Like I said, I don’t remember everything entirely. It’s all really blurry, to be honest.”
“Next thing I know, I was in the back of an ambulance being transported to the hospital. Then I stayed there, and I was doing a bunch of tests and trying to figure out what was going on. It was not the plan.”
The UFC has promised to help Barber get to the bottom of things with the best specialists available. For now there are few answers.
“I was told that it looked like my autonomic nervous system might have been having an issue,” she said. “They said it looked like a pseudo-seizure, is what I was told. But there’s no answer. There’s really nobody going like, ‘Oh, yeah. This is exactly what it was.’ It’s just a lot of, ‘We need to run tests, and we need to get some answers.’”
