Match Overview 

South Africa and New Zealand will take on each other in the second semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025. Both teams have been in relatively good form even in this tournament and won two group stage matches each. Now, they will be looking to make their first Champions Trophy final since 1998 and 2009, respectively. 

2009 was also the last time the two teams met in the Champions Trophy, where South Africa romped home in a group stage encounter in Centurion. New Zealand also managed to get the better of the Proteas in their most recent encounter during the tri-series in Pakistan.

South Africa blew away the wooden spooners, England, in a comprehensive show in their last game. Marco Jansen’s opening burst had England at 37/3, and the Three Lions never recovered from there. Some batters got starts, but nobody converted them, and England found themselves bowled out for 179. 

The target was never obviously a concern for the Proteas, who rode on a sedate fifty from Rassie van der Dussen and a quickfire one from Heinrich Klaasen to romp home in the 30th over. 

New Zealand’s performance in the last match 

New Zealand, on the other hand, went down to India in the last group stage game of the tournament. Matt Henry had India in early trouble at 30/3, but India recovered, thanks to Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. The former made a fifty after taking his time to get settled. Hardik Pandya made a cameo at the end, but Henry returned to complete his fifer at the death and contain India to what appeared to be a below-par 249. 

India’s spinners then took over on the slow Dubai track. Kane Williamson made a fifty, but the spinners kept the pressure on throughout the middle overs, and New Zealand’s batter came a cropper as the asking rate kept climbing up. Varun Chakravarthy took a fifer of his own to keep the Kiwis in check and keep India’s unbeaten streak going in the tournament.
