Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar believes it is quite evident that Prasidh Krishna will have to make way for the returning Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI for the third Test against England. Indian captain Shubman Gill had earlier confirmed that the pace spearhead would return to the bowling attack after missing out on the 336-run victory in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Krishna had initially edged out the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep to secure a spot in the playing XI for the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds. Despite a shaky performance, he managed to retain his place, although he conceded runs at an economy rate of over six per over.
Krishna bowled 13 overs in the first innings of the second Test, finishing with figures of 0 for 72. However, he bounced back in the second innings with a more disciplined spell, returning 1 for 39 in 14 overs. Despite the slight improvement, Gavaskar opined that Krishna struggled to find the right length consistently. He further added that with Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep performing well, it would be difficult to drop either of them at the moment.
“I think it’s clear. Prasidh Krishna has to go out because, in the first innings, he was a bit expensive. Even in Leeds, although he got a few wickets, he really didn’t look like he was going to break through,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
“With Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, you’ve seen the number of top-class deliveries that they’ve bowled. And they might not have gotten wickets – the batters played and missed, and the ball rapped them on the pads. It has to be Prasidh because his length wasn’t quite right. I believe he will make way for Bumrah,” he added.
Deep and Siraj were exceptional with the ball in the second Test, especially on a flat surface that offered little assistance to the bowlers. Deep impressed with a remarkable ten-wicket haul in the match, while Siraj claimed his first-ever five-wicket haul in England in the first innings.
