Flick dodges the transfer question at Mundo Deportivo gala, but the subtext is loud

Hansi Flick received the Coach of the Year award at the 78th Mundo Deportivo gala and was asked the question every Barcelona fan wanted answered. His careful response pointed straight at Deco — and at the political minefield surrounding the club.

There’s a moment from Monday night at the Catalonia Congress Palace that tells you everything about the mood inside Barcelona right now.

Hansi Flick, suit on, award in hand, walks up to Lamine Yamal and tucks the teenager’s oversized necklace inside his shirt. Playful, fatherly, slightly exasperated — like a dad at a wedding telling his son to smarten up. Raphinha steps in, pulls it back out, adjusts it. The whole room laughs. That little scene, captured on camera at the 78th Mundo Deportivo Grand Gala, was arguably more revealing than anything said into a microphone all evening.

Because what Flick actually said into a microphone — when handed the Coach of the Year trophy and asked the question every culé wants answered, who do you want this summer? — was essentially nothing.

The art of saying everything by saying nothing

“It’s a difficult question because I think we have a fantastic team right now. Every decision must be wise,” Flick told the audience at the gala, which marked Mundo Deportivo’s 120th anniversary. Then came the key line: “Deco is an excellent colleague and we discuss everything. Every decision also takes into account the financial situation, but above all the player’s ability to improve the team. If he’s a good person, a good teammate. That’s what we need: good people in this fantastic team.”

No name. No position. Not even a hint. And that, I think, is the point.

Flick is a coach who has won a treble with Bayern Munich and a domestic treble with Barcelona last season. He knows how this game works. Dropping a name at a gala three days before your president is about to resign to run for re-election? That’s a landmine. He stepped right around it.

              The election shadow

Joan Laporta confirmed on February 3 that he’ll formally resign on Monday, February 9, to launch his candidacy ahead of the March 15 vote. Victor Font, his main rival, has already made his position clear: in an interview with RAC1, he said flatly that Deco would not be his sporting director. “My coach will be Hansi Flick, but Deco won’t be my sporting director,” Font stated, per Mundo Deportivo.

So when Flick goes out of his way to praise Deco publicly — “an excellent colleague” — he’s not just being polite. He’s picking a side without picking a side. The German has said previously that he wants to see how the elections play out before making any decisions about his own future beyond 2027. Laporta, speaking at the same gala, went further: “If I become president again, he’ll stay until he decides to leave,” per Barca Blaugranes.

That’s the context around the non-answer. Flick can’t name a target because he doesn’t know who’ll be signing players come June.

What we do know about the shopping list

Even without Flick’s help, the outlines are fairly well established. Barcelona need two things this summer: a centre-back and probably a striker.

Robert Lewandowski’s contract expires at the end of the season. He turns 38 in August. The expectation, reported widely since September, is that this is his final year. Deco himself has been measured about a direct replacement — “You don’t have to obsess over a ‘9’, maybe you can make a mistake,” he told Tot Costa in October. But behind the scenes, the club has been working. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Deco held an initial meeting with Julian Alvarez’s entourage earlier in January to discuss a potential move from Atlético de Madrid. Dusan Vlahovic at Juventus, out of contract the same day as Lewandowski, is another name that has circulated since September, per madrid-barcelona.com.

At centre-back, the departure of Iñigo Martínez left a gap that hasn’t been properly filled. The Touchline reported on February 4 that Deco’s preferred option is Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, with Flick reportedly approving the pursuit. But Sport journalist David Bernabéu pointed to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi — out of contract in June, which fits Barcelona’s penny-counting approach — as the man Deco actually “likes the most.” Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol have also been mentioned.

              The quiet part

Here’s the thing that gets lost in the name game: Flick’s emphasis on “good people” wasn’t throwaway corporate speak. People close to the dressing room say he’s been genuinely protective of the group dynamic this season — a squad that sits top of La Liga with 55 points from 22 games, one clear of Real Madrid. Yamal is scoring in four consecutive matches. Raphinha won the “Cobra” trophy at the same gala. The Copa del Rey semi-final against Atlético is on the horizon.

Why rock the boat by naming names at a black-tie event with cameras rolling?

Flick did say one thing that felt unscripted, almost confessional. “When I see all these images with all these successes, it’s crazy, it’s impressive,” he said. “I’m very happy here and I want to be here for many years.”

That’s the real answer to the real question. He wasn’t asked who he wants to sign. He was asked whether he’s staying. And he said yes — whoever ends up in charge.
