Manchester United star Amad Diallo scored the only goal as defending champions Ivory Coast opened AFCON 2025 with a narrow win over Mozambique. The Elephants dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances in Marrakech.
The defending champions are off the mark. Amad Diallo’s composed finish four minutes into the second half was enough to secure three points for Ivory Coast in their AFCON 2025 opener against Mozambique. But behind the winning result lies a performance that will give coach Emerse Faé food for thought.
Tactical setup: Faé’s 4-3-3 dominates but lacks cutting edge
Ivory Coast lined up in their familiar 4-3-3 shape with Yahia Fofana in goal, protected by a back four of Ghislain Konan, Evan Ndicka, Odilon Kossounou, and Guela Doué. The midfield trio of Franck Kessié, Ibrahim Sangaré, and Jean-Michael Seri controlled the tempo, while Yan Diomandé, Wilfried Zaha, and Amad Diallo formed the attacking trident.
Mozambique adopted a compact 4-4-2 under Chiquinho Conde, with Reinildo Mandava and Mexer marshalling the defence. Geny Catamo, the Sporting Lisbon winger, was given license to counter-attack when opportunities arose, but found himself largely isolated throughout.
The numbers told a story of Ivorian dominance: 54.1% possession, 227 passes completed from 249 attempted (91% accuracy), 15 shots to Mozambique’s four, and nine corners to three. Yet for all their territorial control, the Elephants managed just five shots on target.
First half: possession without penetration
The opening 45 minutes perfectly encapsulated Ivory Coast’s struggles. They had 25 touches inside the opposition box compared to Mozambique’s six, yet couldn’t find a breakthrough. Amad Diallo spurned an early chance, while Zaha’s direct running caused problems without yielding a goal.
Mozambique goalkeeper Ernani Siluane was alert to everything thrown at him. He denied Kessié with a routine stop from distance and pushed Yan Diomandé’s effort over the bar. The Mambas’ organisation frustrated the champions, who went into half-time goalless despite their clear superiority.
The breakthrough: Diallo’s moment of quality
The deadlock was broken in the 49th minute through a well-constructed team move. Guela Doué delivered a dangerous cross from the right, Kessié met it with a firm header that dropped into Diallo’s path, and the Manchester United winger showed composure to place his shot into the bottom left corner.
It was a moment of genuine quality in a match that had been lacking it. Diallo’s finish silenced those questioning his recent form at club level and demonstrated why he remains central to Faé’s plans.

Second-half control without security
With the lead secured, Ivory Coast looked to extend their advantage. Substitute Vakoun Bayo nearly doubled the lead with a strike from distance that forced Siluane into a diving save. Kessié headed wide from a promising position. The chances kept coming, but so did the wastefulness.
Mozambique, to their credit, refused to capitulate. Geny Catamo began to see more of the ball in the final 20 minutes, though Ivory Coast’s defence – marshalled by the impressive Ndicka – remained largely untroubled. Yahia Fofana was a spectator for long periods, making just two saves across the 90 minutes.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory, but the manner of it raised questions. Ivory Coast had dominated without ever appearing comfortable, their finishing touch deserting them at crucial moments.
Key talking points
- Amad Diallo’s form: After struggling for minutes at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, Diallo’s decisive contribution will boost his confidence. He was replaced by Oumar Diakité in the 80th minute after picking up a knock following Reinildo’s yellow-card challenge.
- Defensive solidity: Ivory Coast have now kept a clean sheet in their last three competitive matches. Ndicka and Kossounou look a formidable partnership.
- Mozambique’s resilience: The Mambas have never won an AFCON match in 15 attempts, but this performance showed they can compete. Reinildo’s leadership at the back was outstanding.
- Clinical edge needed: 15 shots for one goal is not a ratio that will win tournaments. Faé must address the finishing before Sunday’s clash with Cameroon.
What’s next?
Ivory Coast face their biggest Group F test on Sunday, December 28, when five-time champions Cameroon visit Marrakech. A win would all but secure qualification for the knockout rounds and make a significant statement about their title credentials.
Mozambique, meanwhile, take on Gabon on the same day in Agadir, seeking their first-ever AFCON victory. Despite the defeat, Chiquinho Conde will have been encouraged by his side’s organisation and discipline against the reigning champions.
