In a tragic turn of events for one of Ligue 1’s most prolific young talents, Joaquin Panichelli is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Strasbourg striker, who has been in scintillating form this season, suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty with Argentina.
The news is a massive blow not only to the player and his club but also to several European giants, including AC Milan, who had been planning a major move for the forward this summer.
Heartbreak on International Duty for Panichelli
The injury occurred during Argentina’s final training session ahead of their friendly against Mauritania.
Reports from the national team’s medical staff indicate that Joaquin Panichelli has torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.
The 21-year-old will require surgery and is expected to be out of action for at least six months.
This effectively ends his season and, most tragically, ruins his hopes of representing Argentina at the upcoming World Cup, where they are set to defend their title.
Panichelli had been enjoying a breakout campaign in France, netting an impressive 20 goals in 39 appearances for Strasbourg since his €17m move last summer.
AC Milan Cross Panichelli Off Transfer Shortlist
Before this injury, AC Milan had identified Panichelli as a primary target to bolster their attacking options for the 2026/27 season.
The Rossoneri scouts had been tracking his progress closely, impressed by his physical presence and clinical finishing.
However, Milan’s management and medical team are notoriously cautious regarding players with a history of serious knee issues. This includes in January when AC Milan rejected Jean-Philippe Mateta due to injury.
Given the severity of this ACL tear — reportedly the second such injury Panichelli has suffered in less than three years — Milan have reportedly decided to “cross him off” their list of potential signings.
Premier League Interest Cools as Recovery Begins
It wasn’t just Italy calling for the young Argentine. Chelsea had also been linked with Panichelli, aided by the shared ownership between the London club and Strasbourg.
Several other Premier League sides were monitoring his development as a potential high-value summer acquisition.
With a minimum six-month recovery period ahead, any talk of a multi-million-pound transfer has been put on ice.
The focus now shifts entirely to Panichelli’s rehabilitation.
For Strasbourg, the loss is immense as they look to finish their domestic campaign strongly without their top scorer.
Fans of the “Blue-and-Whites” and neutrals alike will be hoping that Joaquin Panichelli can find the same resilience that saw him rise from River Plate to become one of Europe’s most talked-about strikers.
