Jose Mourinho has officially left Fenerbahce in Turkey after just one season in charge of the club.
The Turkish giants confirmed that the 62-year-old’s contract had been terminated in a “mutual agreement” following a year as their boss.
Mourinho arrived from AS Roma in July 2024 and had been hoping to make an impact there as he has done at most clubs throughout his tenure as a first class manager.
However his time is now up having finished second behind Galatasaray by 11 points last term. Added to that end to the season last season, this campaign has not began much better.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid gaffer could not guide his side to the Champions League this week having been beaten in their playoff tie by Benfica from Mourinho’s home country.
Jose Mourinho could replace Rangers boss Russell Martin
It was only a 1-0 aggregate score but it was enough to seal his fate. Fenerbahce will play this season in the Europa League.
Another club who will play in European football’s second tier will be Rangers who flopped in their own playoff against Club Brugge on Wednesday evening.
They were dismantled in Belgium 6-0 – it was five before half-time – following a 3-1 loss at Ibrox in the first-leg.
Boss Russell Martin – who failed with Southampton in the Premier League – is under severe pressure having also only guided his team to three draws from their opening three Scottish Premiership fixtures which is a disaster for a club the size of the Light Blues in Scotland.
Martin was given a stay of execution after the Euro trip but a poor result or performance against fierce rivals Celtic this weekend could end his career in Glasgow before it really begins.
That could open the door to what would be an incredible move for Mourinho who has actually previously admitted he would be open to the prospect of taking a job in Scotland.
What Mourinho said about managing Rangers or Celtic
Mourinho – who did his coaching badges in Largs – said back in March: “In this moment, no, because I have a job.
“It’s a job that motivates me and demands loyalty. But why not in the future?
“People can say the Scottish league is a league of two teams, but it is a league of passion. Passion in football is everything.
“To play in empty stadiums and competitions where there is not that fire of the passion does not make any sense.
“Celtic and Rangers are two big clubs with incredible history also in Europe. I have lots of respect. They are big clubs with big fan bases, expectations.
“Celtic has a fantastic coach in Brendan [Rodgers]. Rangers has Ferguson now and I am not searching for a new job.”
