The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 came to a head on Sunday, July 21, as Jaffna Kings and Galle Marvels squared off in the title clash at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Opting to bowl first, Jaffna got off to a brilliant start as they conceded just 24 runs and picked up three wickets at the end of the first seven overs. Tim Seifert played a solid knock of 47 off 37 balls but Bhanuka Rajapaksa was the star of the show. He played a dazzling knock of 82 off 34 balls to help the Marvels get to 184/6 in 20 overs. A whopping 160 runs came off the last 13 overs thanks to Rajapaksa’s blitzkrieg.
In reply, Jaffna got off to the worst possible start as Pathum Nissanka was out caught behind off the first ball from Dwaine Pretorius. However, Rilee Rossouw and Kusal Mendis came together to string a match-winning partnership of 185 runs off just 93 balls to take their team home. Jaffna reached their target with nine wickets and 26 balls in the bank to win a record-extending fourth LPL title.
Rossouw smashed a phenomenal 106 not out off 53 balls, hitting nine fours and seven sixes. Meanwhile, Mendis remained unbeaten on 72 off 40 balls, a knock which comprised eight fours and two sixes.
