Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has criticised recent trends in football officiating, arguing that the sport is becoming “soft” due to excessive sensitivity and increasingly lenient refereeing.
McTominay Speaks Out On Serie A Referees
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the Scotland international reflected on how the game has changed since the start of his career.
“I think football is becoming soft; some decisions are just too lenient,” McTominay said.
He described a growing gap between the physical, fair tackling of his youth and today’s environment, where “even the slightest contact can lead to a yellow card.”
His remarks come amid recent officiating controversies in Serie A, including Pierre Kalulu’s red card in the Inter-Juventus clash.
McTominay argued there is now too much focus on minor incidents and “excessive sensitivity.”
Navigating an ‘Unlucky’ Season Under Antonio Conte
Beyond discussing the state of the game, McTominay addressed Napoli’s challenging season as defending Serie A champions.
The team has struggled with a lengthy injury list, losing key players such as Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, and David Neres for extended periods.
Former Ballon d’Or nominee McTominay is currently recovering from a tendon injury suffered against Genoa, but hopes to return for the upcoming match with Atalanta.
Addressing the team’s struggles, he defended his manager and teammates: “During challenging periods with so many injuries, it’s hard for the coach and staff to find the right balance. We’ve been unlucky, but that’s no excuse.”
The Intensity of Life Under Antonio Conte
Despite the setbacks, McTominay praised the environment fostered by Antonio Conte. He attributed the team’s previous league and Supercup victories to the relentless work done behind the scenes.
Describing Conte as a “strong and passionate” leader, McTominay said the Italian tactician is unlike any coach he has previously worked with. “He instills a sense of uncertainty; with him, you have to give your best or you’ve got a problem,” McTominay explained, emphasizing that the high intensity of training is crucial for success.
As Napoli navigates a challenging period, McTominay remains committed to the standards set by his coach.
