Star batter Travis Head stunned the cricket fraternity when he took a spectacular catch in the final session on Day 2 in the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Galle International Stadium. After scoring a quick-fire half-century (57 off 40 balls) on Day 1, the 31-year-old showed his sharp reflexes when he took a screamer of a catch at short leg to dismiss the experienced Angelo Mathews.

The incident happened in the tenth over of the Sri Lankan innings. Nathan Lyon bowled a flighted delivery outside off-stump, which spun back sharply into the right-handed batter after pitching. Mathews lunged forward to defend, but the prodigious turn and extra bounce meant that the ball ricocheted off his gloves and lobbed up in the air.

Head took a step towards his right, keeping his eyes on the ball, and made a full-stretch dive to take an excellent catch with his right hand. The left-handed batter was delighted with his athletic effort, and his teammates rushed towards him to celebrate the dismissal. The wicket fell at a great time for the tourists as they reduced Sri Lanka to 30/3.

Earlier in the day, Australia declared after scoring a mammoth 654/6 on the back of Usman Khawaja’s remarkable double century (232). Steve Smith, who had registered his 35th Test century on Day 1, got dismissed after scoring 141. Meanwhile, Jos Inglis scored a breezy century on his Test debut, which came off just 90 balls.

Sri Lanka have their backs against the wall as they have finished at 44/3 at Stumps on Day 2. They are still 610 runs behind Australia’s total. However, the hosts will be setting their sights on avoiding the follow on, which looks a fair distance away as things stand.
