Graham Potter has addressed Jarrod Bowen’s angry confrontation with West Ham United fans last night.
The Irons captain was spotted in a heated exchange with supporters at Molineux last night after his side collapsed from a 2-1 lead to lose the game 3-2.
Newcastle United transfer target Jorgen Strand Larsen bagged a late double to sink the visitors and punters who had made the trip could hardly contain their anger.
They did vent their fury towards the skipper after they were knocked out of the EFL Cup and that did not sit well with the 28-year-old who snapped back as a clip showed that was posted online.
It was an angry verbal exchange and Bowen had to be dragged away by stewards as well as his own teammates as their nightmare start to the new domestic campaign continued.
What triggered Jarrod Bowen angry West Ham fan exchange
But now manager Graham Potter – who himself has come under serious fire for his part in the start – has urged the support to unite and get behind the team amid the difficulties.
“Our supporters have been fantastic,” Potter said. “They are hurting because of the results we’ve had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. It’s just an exchange of views by people who care.
“Everyone is hurting, rightly so because we haven’t had the results we’d like. Jarrod has been a fantastic captain and servant for the club.”
Bowen did apologise via his social media channels for his reaction and admitted that emotion had got the better of him.
“Apologies to the fans for tonight’s reaction,” the England star wrote on Instagram.
“I’m someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club.
Bowen apologises to West Ham support
“We ride through the bad times together and I’ll see you all Sunday.”
The Hammers’ season has started dreadfully and last night’s capitulation was just the latest in a line of frustrations for the supporters to deal with.
Their opening day in the Premier League this term kicked off with what was a miserable 3-0 away defeat to newly promoted Sunderland with only Bowen receiving pass marks from the pundits.
The second outing was even worse as they were battered at home by Enzo Maresca’s title hopefuls in a 5-1 doing at the London Stadium.
The fact that they had led last night’s clash thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Lucas Pacqueta – despite finding themselves a goal down – only irked the loyal support as they failed to manage the game.
