Southampton striker Damion Downs has joined Hamburg on loan for the remainder of the season.
The 21-year-old United States international, who has made 14 appearances for the Championship club, returns to the Bundesliga just six months after his £7m arrival from Köln.
Downs, who has not played since late November after suffering an unspecified injury, has yet to score this season. The deal includes an option to buy this summer.
Damion Downs ‘extremely happy’ with Hamburg move
“I’m extremely happy to be joining HSV and looking forward to the journey ahead with the club,” said Downs, who had been linked with Hamburg for several weeks. “I had good talks with the sporting directors, which gave me a good feeling about the task at hand.”
The forward, who was born in Germany but spent most of his early childhood in Texas, took his formative steps in the game with Bavarian sides Schweinfurt 05 and FC Ingolstadt before joining the youth academy of Köln. He signed his first professional contract with Köln in May 2023 and went on to score twice in the Bundesliga the following season, which culminated in relegation.
Before his brief move to England, Downs scored 10 goals for Köln as the club were promoted back to the German top-flight. Claus Costa, Hamburg’s director of football, hailed the striker’s experience and profile.
‘He already knows the Bundesliga’
“He already knows the Bundesliga and brings an interesting mix of quality and potential for development,” said Costa of the 6ft 4in Downs. “Damion is a direct centre-forward and has a great mix of size, pace and ability to get in behind. With his strengths in transition and his presence in the box, he fits very well with the profile of player that we and the coaching staff were looking for.”
Born to an American father and a German mother, Downs represented Germany at youth level before making his competitive debut for Mauricio Pochettino’s United States side in the Gold Cup against Switzerland last year. He has since made six substitute appearances for the US.
“Over the past few days, we worked extremely hard to sign Damion and are delighted that we were able to convince him of both HSV and our long-term vision,” said Hamburg board member Eric Huwer. “We worked hard to convince Damion about HSV and the path we’re on and we’re pleased he’s in agreement.
“This signing goes to show how we can be convincing in showing how desirable we are as a destination for players.
Hamburg are currently 13th in the Bundesliga, five points clear of the drop zone.
