Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu didn’t hold back during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Nerazzurri’s crucial Champions League knockout play-off second leg encounter.
The Romanian manager was visibly upset by the Norwegian journalist’s line of questioning, which led to a heated exchange over respect and the stature of the Italian giants.
The tension follows Inter’s shocking 3-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the first leg last week in Norway. Ahead of the all-important second leg at San Siro, the atmosphere has shifted from tactical preparation to a defence of the club’s honour.
Chivu Furious Over “Shameful” Inter Milan Comments
The spark for the confrontation came when a reporter asked Chivu if Inter should feel “ashamed” if they were to be eliminated by a team from a city of just 50,000 people.
Chivu, clearly offended by the suggestion, removed his headphones to address the journalist directly.
“Yeah, you even laugh. Congratulations,” Chivu remarked sarcastically. “Nothing is shameful in football. There is work from a club and a team on both sides. We have to respect the opponent, given that you don’t respect us by speaking this way.”
Chivu went on to praise the work Bodo/Glimt have done, noting their impressive results against major European sides like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Dortmund in recent seasons.
However, he insisted that a loss on the pitch should never be equated with shame.
Can Inter Milan Overturn the Bodo/Glimt Deficit?
The task on the pitch remains a daunting one for Chivu’s men. Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Inter need a clinical performance at the San Siro to progress.
Despite the pressure, Chivu is refusing to let the outside noise affect his squad.
“We are not ashamed because we tried to be the best version of ourselves last week,” Chivu added. “They were better than us, and we congratulated them. But we are focused on the future and the next match.”
Inter vs Bodo/Glimt: A Test of Character at San Siro
Beyond the tactical battle, tomorrow’s match has become a test of character for the Nerazzurri.
Chivu also touched upon the state of mind of defender Alessandro Bastoni, who has been at the center of recent controversies, stating he is proud of how the player has handled a “bad week.”
As for the motivation required to mount a comeback, Chivu believes his players already know what is at stake.
“There’s no need to motivate them; they know how important this game is,” he concluded. With the pride of Milan on the line, San Siro expects a response.
