Former India opener Aakash Chopra has urged India to adopt an aggressive batting approach on Day 4 of the 1st Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, recommending that they score around 150 to 175 runs in approximately 40 overs before declaring their second innings. India ended Day 3 with a first-innings lead of 178 runs. India posted 462 in their first innings after batting first, while Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284.
Chopra’s central argument is that India should add 178 more runs to their lead to reach a target of around 350 but must do so quickly given a forecast of around a 40 per cent chance of rain on August 18 at Galle, where temperatures are expected to reach 31°C. He specifically called out Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul by name, asking both openers to shift their approach for the second innings.
“Add 178 more to 178 and reach 350. Even if you play at an average of five, it will take you 40 overs to score 200, and there are huge chances of rain. So you will have to move really quickly. You will have to play slightly aggressively. Yashasvi, play like Yashasvi. KL Rahul, you have many gears. Activate the T20 and ODI gear this time,” Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Why does Chopra want India to declare rather than bat on?
Chopra’s case for an early declaration rests on the risk of losing overs to rain and the time required to bowl Sri Lanka out in their second innings. With a 40 per cent chance of rain on Day 4, he believes India cannot afford to bat deep into the day and still expect a result on the final day. He pointed to the depth in India’s batting order as a reason why the team can afford to be bold with the declaration.
“There is a lot of depth in the batting. Just keep moving faster. I am giving India about 40-odd overs. Score around 150 to 175 runs and declare. Bite the bullet. I know if 50 overs happen and 90 overs of the last day also happen, we can actually end up on the losing side in 140 overs,” the Agra-born added.
What happens if India bat too long or rain intervenes?
Chopra outlined two specific scenarios that could work against India if they do not move quickly enough in their second innings. The first is that Sri Lanka, given enough time, could chase down a target of 350 in the second innings. The second is that rain could cost India a session, leaving them without enough overs to bowl the hosts out on the final day.
He stressed that the combination of rain risk and the available number of overs across Day 4 and Day 5 makes the timing of the declaration critical.
“If the full match happens and we are unable to bowl them out, they will have the time to score 350 runs. However, we will be left rubbing our hands if we bat for too long and a session gets spoilt due to rain. It is going to be a tough one, but that’s the bullet that India must bite,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added.
