Newcastle United are weighing up a potential summer move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as they continue their search for a striker.
After missing out on Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United, the Magpies have identified Aghehowa as one of a select group of candidates to bolster their frontline ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Why Do Newcastle Want Samu Aghehowa?
Newcastle’s striker hunt has intensified amid uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park.
The Swedish forward has attracted significant interest from Liverpool, with a £110 million bid recently rejected by Newcastle.
With this in mind, the club are exploring alternative options, and Aghehowa has emerged as a top target.
The towering 6ft 4in striker impressed in his debut season at Porto, netting 27 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions.
Notably, he scored twice against Manchester United in last season’s Europa League group stage clash, showing his ability to perform on big occasions.
Newcastle Striker Targets
Besides Aghehowa, Newcastle are also eyeing Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen. However, Wolves reportedly consider Strand Larsen “not for sale”, potentially limiting Newcastle’s options.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle pursued RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and even had a €82.5 million offer accepted. But Sesko preferred a move to Manchester United, who agreed a €76.5 million deal and allowed the player to undergo a medical.
Newcastle’s head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged the club’s urgent need for reinforcements during a recent interview.
Several attacking talents linked to the Magpies, such as Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Dean Huijsen, and James Trafford, have opted to move elsewhere this transfer window, complicating Newcastle’s recruitment drive.
Porto have brought in former Newcastle striker Luuk De Jong – but whether this has any impact on Aghehowa’s future remains to be seen.
Samu Aghehowa Name Change
Formerly known as Samu Omorodion, the young striker changed his surname in late 2024 to honour his mother, Edith Aghehowa.
The Nigerian-born Edith left her home country while pregnant and settled in Spain to provide a better future for her children.
In a heartfelt interview, Aghehowa explained the decision:
“I changed my surname because my mother gave us life and risked her life to raise us. She gave everything so that my sister and I could have the best life possible. She deserved to be known by her surname.”
Since adopting the name Aghehowa, the striker has continued to impress, scoring 25 goals in 39 appearances during his second professional season — a remarkable feat for a player just turned 21.
What Kind of Player Is Samu Aghehowa?
Aghehowa is a classic modern No. 9: powerful, direct, and with a keen eye for goal.
His tall physical frame allows him to hold off defenders effectively, while his bursts of acceleration and intelligent movement make him a constant threat in the box.
He scores a variety of goals — from poacher’s finishes and headers to spectacular efforts like overhead kicks — and has a knack for making runs behind the defensive line and linking up well with teammates.
His style and progression made him a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for Porto, who finished third in the Primeira Liga.
Should the deal progress, Aghehowa could be a significant signing for the Magpies as they prepare to push in the Champions League next season.
