Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick has explained why the Premier League champions chose restraint rather than force through a deal for another attacker, saying the club aims to protect its principles instead of pursuing transfers at any cost.
The comments follow an important summer of change at the Emirates, with Mikel Arteta’s squad reshaped by several arrivals and departures. Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis were among Arsenal’s headline additions, while Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli were among the senior attackers to move on.
Arsenal strengthened key areas of the squad but did not add another attacker late in the window when the right opportunity did not materialise. Garlick’s explanation provides context for that approach, with the club seeking to balance the need to complete business with the principles it wants to maintain in negotiations, a contrast to previous windows when Arsenal have been willing to force deals through, Raheem Sterling’s loan move from Chelsea is often cited as the clearest recent example of that older approach.
Richard Garlick On Arsenal’s Transfer Negotiation Philosophy
Garlick said Arsenal enter negotiations with a clear idea of what they want to achieve while keeping sight of the club’s principles as a football leadership team. His description of the process was centred on conducting business sensibly, rather than simply completing a deal because pressure is building.

He also presented a successful negotiation as one in which the parties may not all be completely satisfied, saying Arsenal’s priority is ensuring the player arriving at the end of a transaction is “very, very happy,” even if the process proves difficult for the club or an agent along the way.
That position helps explain why Arsenal were prepared to be active in the market while remaining reluctant to conclude business simply because the deadline was approaching. The club’s strategy was not presented as a rejection of spending, but as an effort to make sure any deal fits its wider plans. Garlick joined Arsenal in 2021 as Director of Football Operations, was promoted to Managing Director in 2024, and became Chief Executive Officer in September 2025, giving him a close view of how the club’s recruitment approach has evolved across that period.
Men In Blazers Interview: Garlick On Guimaraes, Konsa And Tzolis
Garlick set out Arsenal’s approach in an appearance on the Men in Blazers YouTube channel. The Premier League’s official transfer review also highlighted Guimaraes, Konsa and Tzolis among Arsenal’s key additions as the champions strengthened for another title challenge, part of what was described as a record-breaking Premier League spending window across the division as a whole.
Arsenal’s Summer Window: Guimaraes And Konsa In, Jesus And Martinelli Out
Arsenal were willing to invest during the summer, bringing in Guimaraes, Konsa and Tzolis as significant additions. Separately, Jesus, Trossard and Martinelli were among the senior attackers to depart, while Arsenal did not make another late attacking addition.

The window therefore showed both sides of the philosophy outlined by Garlick. Arsenal addressed important areas of the squad, while remaining patient in the search for another attacker rather than completing a deal when the preferred opportunity was unavailable. Reports suggest the club is now likely to wait until January, or even next summer, before returning to the market, with Garlick, sporting director Andrea Berta, Arteta and the Kroenke ownership already discussing future targets.
Why Arsenal Avoided A Panic Attacker Signing This Summer
Garlick’s comments frame Arsenal’s decision as a distinction between spending heavily and spending without the right conditions. The club can be ambitious in the market, but its leadership wants that ambition to operate within a defined approach to negotiations and recruitment.
That approach can frustrate supporters when attractive targets are missed, particularly at the end of a transfer window. However, Arsenal’s position is that any new player must be the right fit and arrive on terms that make sense for the club and the player.
For Arsenal, the summer ended with substantial change to the squad and no forced late attacking addition. Garlick’s message is that the club intends to be aggressive when a deal fits its plans, but not reckless when it does not.
