Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have registered their fifth fifty-plus opening partnership in T20 Internationals in 2026, matching the record for the most such stands by an Indian opening pair in a single calendar year. The milestone was reached on October 22, 2026, as the pair continued their consistent run at the top of India’s batting order.
With this fifth fifty-plus stand, Samson and Abhishek now sit level with two other Indian opening combinations: KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, who achieved the same tally in 2021, and Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, who matched that mark in 2025. No Indian opening pair has managed more than five such partnerships in a calendar year in T20Is.
The pair also now hold eight fifty-plus opening partnerships in T20Is in total, tied for the most by any Indian opening combination across all years. That overall tally underlines just how reliably the two have set up India’s innings since they began opening together.
What has the Samson-Abhishek partnership produced in 2026?
The two batters have been a consistent presence at the top of India’s T20I order throughout 2026. One of their most notable contributions came in the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, where they added 98 runs for the opening wicket, providing India with a strong platform in the title match. That stand alone illustrated the pair’s ability to deliver under the highest pressure.
Samson’s form across the tournament was recognised at the highest level: he was named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 T20 World Cup, a reflection of the sustained impact he made with the bat throughout the competition. The pair also opened together in four completed matches during India’s T20I series against West Indies in October 2026, which ended in a 2-2 draw, giving them further valuable time in the middle together ahead of the New Zealand assignment.
Across these two assignments alone — the World Cup final and the West Indies series — the pair accumulated significant experience of batting together in varied conditions and match situations. That continuity has been a key factor in their ability to build fifty-plus stands with such regularity in 2026.
What is the context heading into the New Zealand T20I series?
India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand began on October 22, 2026. The series provides Samson and Abhishek with further opportunity to extend their record tally of fifty-plus opening stands in a calendar year beyond the five they have now accumulated. With five matches available, the pair have a realistic chance of pushing the calendar-year mark to a level no Indian opening combination has previously reached.
Having already faced New Zealand in the 2026 T20 World Cup final and then played four T20Is against West Indies, the pair arrive at this series with considerable match practice together in 2026. The familiarity they have built — both in terms of running between the wickets and reading each other’s game — has been evident in the consistency of their fifty-plus stands across different series and conditions.
Whether they can push the calendar-year record beyond five will be one of the key statistical threads to follow across the remaining matches of the series. Each new fifty-plus stand would take them into uncharted territory for an Indian opening pair in a single calendar year in T20Is.
