England completed a crushing innings-and-103-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley, wrapping up the match before tea on the third day despite losing more than half a day’s play to rain. The one-sided contest lasted barely three days and left Pakistan with serious questions to answer about their batting and overall approach to the series.
Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, admitted after the match that he “really fears” for Pakistan, adding that he had never seen a side from that country look so timid. His assessment captured the scale of the tourists’ difficulties across both innings at Headingley.
“They’ve been absolutely blown away. They’ve been hammered. I’ve never seen them look so timid. The tactical side wasn’t there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short. I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week. I’ve seen many Pakistan sides play and this side just seem to be lacking all that spirit and fight we’ve become accustomed to seeing. I really fear for Pakistan,” Vaughan said on BBC Test Match Special
The result gave Joe Root the ideal start to his return as England’s permanent Test captain. Root took charge following a turbulent period for English cricket, with Ben Stokes stepping down from the captaincy and Brendon McCullum being relieved of his red-ball coaching duties after a series defeat by New Zealand eight weeks earlier.

England’s batting set the platform for victory. The hosts added 43 runs to their overnight total on the third morning to reach 409, a total that gave them a first-innings lead of 238 over Pakistan. That margin proved far beyond what the tourists could realistically chase down, and Pakistan never threatened to make England bat again.
Pakistan’s batting offered little resistance in either innings. Their second innings lasted just 37.3 overs as England’s pace attack applied consistent pressure throughout, dismissing the tourists for 135 and completing the win with considerable time to spare.

Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson were the most effective members of England’s attack in Pakistan’s second innings, each claiming three wickets.
